My Bio
Gary Hawley
Training:
Boston University School of Artisanry, DeCordova Museum School
Influences:
I worked as a furniture maker for many years then began working in metal. The two mediums were distinct in my mind, with different tools and different approaches. Several years ago my family and I went to Oaxaca, Mexico, to live for six months. While there I came to appreciate their traditional combination of wood and silver, as well as turquoise and silver. When I returned home I no longer saw woodworking and metalsmithing as separate disciplines. I now combine my skills in both mediums, sometimes working primarily in metal, sometimes wood, often allowing each to complement the other. The gemstones add a final touch of color and light.
